Yes, things are quite serious in Kyoto now.  Aotabo has finally put the kids to bed and taken the field.

Let me just quickly say that as a matter of course, I would love to have a blog post on Nurarihyon out sooner than Mondays.  It’s a matter of waiting and hoping for a HQ sub, but I usually end up settling for a LQ anyway.  No one appreciates the hard work subbers do more than I do, believe me, so I’m not complaining.

In  terms of the episode itself, it continues the trend this season has been on for quite a while – quality steadily increasing, and the story steadily getting darker.  It’s interesting that DEEN has chosen to mix in backstory on the Night Parade at the same time so many important things are happening in the current time, but it does work fairly well for what it is.  A lot of the focus this week was on Aotabo.  While his human story sounds a bit too close to Anji from Rurouni Kenshin for comfort, it does at least explain how he so often ends up in the babysitting role.  As badass a priest as he is, though, it seems to me as if Shoukera is winning their battle before Hidemoto and Yura show up.

Turns out that board on Ibaraki Douji’s face was a stupa from his father’s grave apparently, and he’s a lot better looking before Kubinashi cuts it off.  We get a continued history lesson on Kubinashi’s human past, too, and it looks as if he was a self-styled Robin Hood of sorts who was friends with a nine year-old Kejoro.  I can’t help but laugh every time Fujiwara Keiji has a speaking part as Rikuo’s father – yet another deceased character for Fujiwara-san.  But he remains the enigmatic presence I’m still most curious about.  Nurarihyon is a beast even as an old man, and to think that even in hos prime he’d have been no match for the second heir – it beggars the imagination.

As for the third heir, he’s not much present in the episode.  His training with Gyuji and an old youkai who as far as I know still hasn’t been identified – but who looks very much like a tengu – is going poorly, to say the least.  But there’s not a lot of time to draw this out, even with Hidemoto and Yura having placed a seal at the Keikain HQ – Kubinashi and Kejoro appear to be in bad shape, Tsurara is a captive of Tsuchigumo and the hunt for livers and Chianti is still going strong.

Are you using Hulu to watch the series? IMO, they get the episodes out pretty quickly and the quality is pretty decent (not HD, but 480p isn't bad).

As for concerns about drawing Rikuo's training out, you don't need to worry. Based on my knowledge of the manga the preview makes it clear that next episode is going to be the end of his training, ushering in some of the most epic ass-kicking in the series. Man, waiting a week is going to be tough…

  2. Can't screencap Hulu! I could use a raw for that, but the quality jump for a 480p viewing doesn't seem worth the extra work. I occasionally get an HQ sub on Monday, so I always hope…

Actually, the Tengu has been identified: he was in Kitsune's Hyakki Yakou 400 years ago and got a formal introduction there. Interestingly, 400 years later he is replaced by Minagoroshi Jizou (who is in the same faction as Yosuzume who just brought him a certain blade) who seems to have somehow brainwashed the entire Kyoto Clan as shown by the fact that nobody, but almighty Tsuchigumo, remembers Tengu and think that Minagoroshi is their old buddy. Even the Mighty Kitsune seems to dance on palm of that old geezer's hand. The plot chickens.

Anyway, the amount of backstory flashbacks was kinda surprising. The battles also didn't happen at the same time but one after another tough I think the merge ended up being for the better.

Also, Ibaraki's backstory was cut short. Here are some Manga links for those who want to check it out:
