Shouen Jump titles just don’t get any shounen-er or jump-y than Hunter x Hunter

I certainly enjoyed the second episode just fine.  This is an agreeably high-energy series, bright and loud and cheerful – though I know it gets darker as it goes along.  I find Gon’s sunny optimism quite likeable, and it’s nice to hear Fujiwara Keiji cutting up in a light-hearted role.  The premise is pretty straightforward and easy to grasp, and not uninteresting.  I don’t have anything to compare it to as I haven’t read the manga or seen the original series, bur so far I have nothing to complain about.

At the same time, I’m somewhat hard-pressed to find too much to say about it.  I dislike writing blog posts that amount to summaries of what happened – I figure you’ve already seen the episode if you’re reading them, or at least are trying to make up your mind whether you should bother.  So it fundamentally comes down to two things – analysis and opinion.  With a series like Mawaru Penguin Drum, analysis can carry you through the entire post.  But Hunter x Hunter (and most series like it) are pretty straightforward, without a lot of subtext, and opinion can only take you so far.  My opinion in this case?  I like it.  It’s pretty fun, and looks nice.

So while I plan to continue watching, I confess I’m a bit torn about whether to blog this show.  I don’t want to just fill space, but I also know things supposedly get darker and more complex as we get deeper into the series – and the second main character hasn’t even appeared yet.  So if there’s a consensus of genuine interest among the readers, maybe I’ll keep up with it – otherwise, I’ll probably switch to lurker mode.  Let me know what you think.

Keep up, I enjoy reading your post and it should be interesting to read the opinion of someone that didn't watch the original series or read the manga

  2. Thanks, leo – duly noted. It may end up being either/or with this and Gundam.

Well, as long as you like doing it so should it be fine with blogging it. It's at least unlikely to get boring or drag out much as it's going at a double quick pace with this second episode ending where the original anime's 5th episode did.

i'm also interested in the opinion of someone who has never read or seen hxh before. god knows i only hear raving or bshing from nostalgiafags (not really bad but i would like to see a different viewpoint)

    hopefull you keep reviewing. *bookmarks*

Since the pacing is faster this time, each episode had a beginning, a middle, and an end so there is not much to speculate.

Hunter x Hunter gradually becomes more complex as it goes. The challenges on this episode were a little more elaborate than in the first one.

Therefore, i suspect that each week you will have a little more to say about the series, compared to each week before (excluding the premiere, of course, since it contains all the first impressions).

  6. Hmmm… A candidate for the "mini-post" option I've been mulling, perhaps.

I actually suggest that you start blogging this when it got more interesting. From what I could see they were rushing through the hunter examination, what used to be 3 episode become just one. Maybe when they finally not rushing?

@lkaze: 2 episodes here animated 4 Manga chapters (or so I heard). Thats normal pacing for adaptations of Manga, not rushed.
